I have had some excellent hamburgers, in fact I am craving one right now. However, I think the most I ever paid for one at a four star resort was $35 (including the fries but no wine) and it was nothing special but I was starving and had no other place to go.
In Vegas they do not have normal hamburgers. Called the FleurBurger, it is still a mainstay on the menu for $5,000!
It is chef Hubert Keller’s creation at his Fleur de Lys restaurant in Vegas. Why is it worth $5,000? Well, it is Kobe Beef with black truffles that just happens to be paired with a bottle of 1990 Château Pétrus (the year could have changed since I last looked). They also let you take home the imported stemware (last I heard they were Ichendorf Brunello stemware imported from Italy) that they served the Pétrus in. Without wine and perhaps the fries, you could have the burger for just $75.00 — that is quite a deal.
I cannot say that I have tried this burger, it must be out of this world considering the chef, but it is the perfect example of what Econ 1 describes as conspicuous consumption. It has apparently outlived the Great Gatsby era, at least for the high-rollers in Vegas.
Now that I am craving a burger, I will fix my WineFoodChat “Blue Plate Special” at home tonight. It will come with fries and a bottle of BV Tapestry, now that combo always works for me every time.

Not the FleurBurger, but I am ready now! Where's the wine?
