I found an interesting article the other day, that I tweeted, regarding Sigmund Pretzel Shop in NYC’s East Village and how they have taken pretzels up a level — Gourmet. Sigmund is a great name for the shop too as am crazy for pretzels.
Pretzels are not just sold on the street corner, chowed down at the Yankees (or Mets) game, or served just with beer for Oktoberfest any more.
Sigmund’s has lots of flavored pretzels, as well as the original plain, that you can order with specialized assorted dips and toppings. I am sure you can even make your own requests. However, something that caught my attention was that they serve something new, at least for me, home made pretzel sandwiches. Never imagined that combination, but now that I have heard of it — I want one right now!
I know what you are thinking, this sounds like the business model for Noah’s Bagels, in a way it is. I think that this will be something to look for in a city near you if they plan on franchising Sigmund’s. I would certainly do my best to keep them in business that is for sure — my husband can attest to the fact that I am an unadulterated pretzel nut.
They also serve a variety of juices, sodas, coffees, teas, and specialized donuts (NYPD take notice). As far as something a bit stronger with your pretzels they are seeking approval for, you guessed it, beer. They are also seeking a license for wine which I think will go great with these gourmet pretzels. The wine pairing will certainly be fun with all the different flavored pretzels and sandwich combinations.
Right now, I wished I lived in NYC or was going there soon. I am dying to try this place and one (or more) of their pretzel sandwiches. The cheddar pretzel sounds pretty good too.
Ok, this came to mind during the writing of this article and could not resist a little “Pretzel Logic”. Updated by Donald Fagen and Michael McDonald:
For photos of what I am talking about, go to another article on the Sigmund Pretzel Shop at Always Hungry New York – if you live in or are visiting New York do not all rush there all at once!
We’ll know that pretzels are a commercial success when Costco starts selling pretzel shaped ham and turkey slices!
@Trailqueen –
Costco will sell anything. I will not be surprised when they start selling these in bulk sometime soon!
