Did You Know it is Strawberry Shortcake Day?

Traditional Strawberry Shortcake

Yes it is! This is going to be short (no pun intended, well maybe just a little), sweet, and to the point.

As most of us have rather busy lifestyles it is often hard to drop everything and prepare recipes that take more than 10 minutes. I am a foodie and enjoy great food that is most often prepared by others (meaning I like to go out to dinner a lot!). I do like to cook, but am not a recipe writer or have the time to attempt a gourmet dinner outside of a weekend. However, when I learned today was National Strawberry Shortcake Day, I do have a couple of versions we like, that carry a bit of a punch (this is WineFoodChat!), and will in fact have version #1 for our dessert tonight.

It is a very quick version of  strawberry shortcake, I really do not like the classic versions, so I made up my own.  It takes no time at all and is nice after a long day after dinner or anytime for that matter, especially during the summer.

WineFoodChat Strawberry Shortcake #1 (Grand Marnier Version)

Makes one serving.

Ingredients:

1-2 Scoops French Vanilla Ice Cream

4-6 Strawberries (freshly bought)

1- 2 Ounces of Grand Marnier

1-2 Shortcake Cookies

Prep Time: 5 minutes!

Calories: Your guess is as good as mine

Scoop the ice cream into a small bowl or a large martini glass, cut up the strawberries, add the Grand Marnier by pouring over the ice cream and strawberries, then break up 1-2 small shortbread cookies over the top (or serve them whole for dipping).

I do not like whipped cream on this, but if you like go for it. If you know how to make your own whipped cream this will add to the prep time (if you buy make sure it is a quality brand).

Also, you can add about a 1/2 to a teaspoon of melted hazelnut or dark chocolate drizzled on top if you wish, this will also add to the prep time.

WineFoodChat Strawberry Shortcake #2 (Champagne Version)

Makes one serving.

1-2 Scoops Sorbet (or good old Sherbet!). Some that are good with this are: banana-strawberry, strawberry, mango, and others to your liking. (the best if you can find it or make it is a champagne sorbet this works even with the additional champagne added).

4-6 Strawberries (freshly bought)

4 Ounces of Demi-Sec Sparking Wine (actually the best is Moet Necter Imperial, you can then drink it with the dessert too!)

1 Pinch of Orange Zest (optional)

1 Thin Shortcake Crisp

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Calories: Less than recipe #1!

Scoop the sorbet into a saucer style champagne class (if they even make these any more — the martini glass will work too), add sliced strawberries, pour the champagne or sparkling wine carefully all along the inside rim of the glass, then put the shortbread crisp (or two if you like) on the inside of the glass.

Now I will be thinking all day about dessert, but if your idea of strawberry shortcake is more traditional and you have some time, I added Food Network’s stars and viewers take on Strawberry Shortcake from easy to hard:
